Went to AMK for KTV with Dean & Karen. First time I ktv-ed in like 6 months??? Feels good to sing again! Haha.. Although I think I sounded like I was croaking most of the time. After that we went to Andy's ice cream shop at AMK Big Mac Centre (2nd level, opposite Shop & Save) for some yummilicious ice-cream...
Three of us inside the shop...
Three of us at the counter of the shop...
*Pictures courtesy of Dean* hurhur
Those who live in the AMK, Toa Payoh region, please frequent the ice-cream shop! Its good ice-cream, low sugar, low fat! :P
Anyway time to share "the stupid things Liyan said at work..."
My supervisors & I were talking about butters & margarine and trans-fat...
Supervisors: So would you advise your patient to have butter or margarine?
Me: Er, margarine, because butter has got alot of saturated fat..........trans-fat cause cancer.....
Supervisors: NO, trans-fat don't cause cancer, it causes heart disease...
Me: *to myself* I'm an idiot... I learnt this ten thousand times and I still cannot remember... I have to shoot myself...
Every friday during the debrief I somehow will spout some nonsense and make myself look really silly. I have a love-hate relationship with fridays... Urgh...

Fructose Question
Had a little conversation with my FST peeps and they seem to think that the fructose question posed by my supervisors is quite a bit of a controversial topic.
So I did a little research and approached one of my FST profs for help.
Here goes...
Dear Dr Huang,
......
I'm currently pursuing my masters degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and
I have a question regarding fructose and blood glucose level. I
understand that fructose is sometimes used as a substitute for sucrose
to sweeten foods for people with diabetes. Does fructose consumption
affect blood glucose level? ie. does fructose metabolism require insulin
for absorption into cells?
Best Regards,
Liyan
Dear Liyan,
Regarding to fructose, it is a bit of a controversial. To answer your
question,
Yes, Fructose will lead to rise of glucose level because it can be
converted to glucose in the liver rather rapidly. Fructose per se,
however, does not provoke release of insulin. Fructose is mainly
metabolized in the liver and the transportation of fructose is
accomplished by GLUT-5 NOT by GLUT-4 which is regulated by insulin.
Regards,
Dejian
Well, I guess ingesting fructose per se will not increase your BGL level. I spoke to my supervisor today and she said what she was trying to get at is that using fructose as a substitute, the patient is going to take in less calories as compared to normal sugar. So indirectly, its going to help in improving the glycemic control of the patient. Oh well... Then some of you are going to say the use of aspartame results in almost negligible caloric intake. Oh well...
What matters most is that we all learnt something! Right???

TGIF!!
*this is a long post, proceed at your own risk!*
Oh finally... Placement is really draining me. I bring work back home to do everyday, wake up early everyday and sleep late everyday. I feel like my petrol has all run dry. Seriously. My previous placements had never felt like that.
1st placement: APB - Work was hard, but it was physically demanding more than anything else. Didn't really have to use my brain (much) and I never had to bring work home to complete. Never tested on what I think/feel about an activity, exercise.
2nd placement: DoH, SA - Used quite a bit of brain work everyday at work. Supervisor does ask questions about my opinions/understanding of issues and activities. The work environment was not very stressful and I never had to bring work home to do! (Well, except for the occasional preparation for presentations). I could even do my uni stuff at work! That is, if I've completed my actual work at the office.. heh...
Current placement: Stressful, always have to be alert, constantly thinking, making intelligent guesses (at least I think they're intelligent! :P) Always tested for accuracy for things I've done and it feels like everyday is an examination.
Of course I can understand the rationale behind such strict measures for students like us. Working in the hospital environment, we have to be careful with what we do. This I mean every action/plan we choose has to be for the best interest of the person we're caring for and most importantly, it must be evidence-based best practice.
I'm just really really glad its Friday, and no work for 2 days! Plus, next week there's a public holiday!!!
Anyway, something really outta point. I have to tell everyone the silly things that I've been telling my supervisors. No wonder they think I'm stupid! Haha!
Supervisors: So why do you think diabetic patients take fructose as an artificial sweetener? Whats the difference between sucrose (normal sugar) and fructose? Is it okay to use fructose?
Me: Er... sucrose is glucose + fructose, while fructose is just fructose.....
Supervisors: Eh? You studied food science before right, so this should be really easy for you...
Me: Er... Fructose goes through the pentose phosphate pathway to provide us with energy...
Supervisors: Patients won't understand you...
Another student: Fructose is sweeter, natural...
Me: Oh yah! Sweeter! Means we can use lesser fructose and less effect on blood glucose level!
Supervisors: *Shake heads and sigh*
Whoops... I should really shut up and not tell people that I studied food science. Otherwise everyone will think all food science students know nothing. Which REALLY isn't true! I bet my food science classmates knew the answer the moment they saw the question. Hur hur...
Okay, tired of typing. More updates on "the stupid things Liyan said at work" next time!

Howdy from SG!
Its my first post from sunny island of Singapore!
Was madly unpacking the 75kg of stuff I lugged back from Adelaide. Spent 3 whole days doing that, and I'm only 50% done. I can't believe I bought so much trash over the 2 years that I was away. Shopping!
I've started my clinical placement on Monday and its been tiring. Seriously. I walk/stand most of the time and being on your feet with heels on is no joke. The heels of my feet hurt from the pressure of the having my entire body weight on 2 small "heels". I seriously need to go buy a pair of flats to walk around in.
Three more days to go to the weekend. Can't wait cos I'll be meeting up with so many people! Can't wait to see everyone! I'll post up pictures that I've taken at my farewell dinners soon. Once I get my stuff organized! =P
Stay tuneD!
